Regional Juried Railroad Show set to open in September
PHOTOSTOP Gallery’s first juried show, “All Aboard! Riding the Rails”, will be on display from September 3rd through the 25th with an opening reception on Sept. 3 (a White River Junction First Friday) from 5-8 pm. Juror Tony Decaneas, former owner of the Panopticon Gallery in Boston, has selected thirty-eight images from photographers all over New England for the exhibition which focuses on various aspects of the train experience.
In addition to the selected regional photographs, Shawn Michelle Smith, a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, will be exhibiting a portfolio of her conceptual work during the exhibition. Using found photographs, her work documents the historical evolution of the train and photography as catalysts for mobility in the modern age.
The Gallery is located in White River Junction, VT, just steps from the Amtrak rail system. The town was the first and largest railroad center in Vermont and New England north of Boston.
On September 11, during the exhibit, White River Junction will hold its 18th Annual Glory Days of the Railroad Festival, an event chosen as one of the Top Ten events by the VT Chamber of Commerce in 2007.

New Weekend Workshops and Classes for Fall!
We have an exciting slate of classes scheduled for Fall.
September 18 & 19 – Bird Photography Workshop with Ligia Dovale-Kiamco, 9-5 both days, $350, materials list sent upon registration. This hands-on class will cover a wide variety of topics including equipment considerations, composition, working with light, how to approach the birds, and how to use the equipment you have to its best advantage. We’ll be traveling to a couple of locations for shooting and participants will get feedback on their work from the instructor. Ligia is an award-winning, published nature photographer and is a sought-after lecturer in many photographic venues. She will present a lecture at the New England Camera Club Council’s (NECCC) annual conference in 2011. Her website is http://www.ligiaphoto.com/. Limited to 12.
October 2 – Photo Imagining in the Digital Age with Olivia Parker, 9-5, $200. Renowned photographer Olivia Parker will be teaching this rare workshop in tandem with her exhibit here at PHOTOSTOP during the month of October, “Still and Not So Still Life”. In this workshop participants will be exploring the development of image ideas as well as the technical possibilities in Photoshop that open the door to individual expression. This class is designed for participants with some Photoshop experience. During the workshop, Olivia will also review portfolios, if desired. Olivia’s website is http://www.oliviaparker.com/. Sept. 14 – How to Choose a Digital Camera with Lia Rothstein, 7-9 pm, $35. Thinking about buying a digital camera but don’t know the high tech terminology or where to start? If so, this session is for you. Learn the factors you should consider before investing in a digital camera or upgrading to a different model. We’ll have samples of digital cameras on hand for you to examine close-up.
Sept 28, Oct. 5, 12, 19, and 26 – Learn How to Use Your Digital Camera with Lia Rothstein, 6:30-9 pm, $225 (if taken with the class on 9/14, $250 total). Learn what all the dials and menus mean on your camera and how to use them effectively. Topics to be covered include image resolution, file formats, storage media, ISO, white balance, color spaces, sharpening, metering systems, histograms, exposure compensation, viewfinders, & more.

40 Photographers Walked, Shot Photos, and Shared Images in WRJ, VT on July 24th!
A fun time was had by all during the Third Annual International Photo Walk sponsored by Scott Kelby on July 24th. Nearly 35,000 photographers worldwide took part in this event in countries spanning the globe. PHOTOSTOP Director Lia Rothstein led a group of enthusiastic shooters of all ages on a Walk through some often unseen locations in White River Junction. A beautiful summer evening was enhanced by activities at the Main Street Museum, the Schultz Library, the train station and other locations around town. Rubin Opening A Fun Evening Filled with Memories and Images
Renowned digital artist Cynthia Beth Rubin talked about her drawings, which were done 40 years ago.
PHOTOSTOP’s opening reception for artist Cynthia Beth Rubin on Feb. 5 was well attended. The artist traced her history as a digital artist and her long ties to Vermont and the Upper Valley. She was one of the original founders of the AVA Gallery, currently located in Lebanon, NH. In the above photo she holds her drawings which were later paired with photographs in her Glen Memories series of works, on display in the Gallery through March 6th.
