Seeing with New Eyes with Carla Kimball

May 8, 4-7pm and Wednesday evenings 5/11, 5/18, 5/25, & 6/1 from 7-8:30 pm
9 instructional hours, $175, limited to 8 students, A materials list sent upon registration.

The advent of the digital camera has made photography much more accessible to everyone.  But what do we take photos of?  Snapshots of friends and family? Scenic views? Beautiful sunsets?

In this class we’ll learn look at the world differently. Drawing on contemplative photography practice and influenced by the Buddhist Miksang approach to photography, we’ll discover the beauty and mystery in the ordinary.  This is not a technique class, although we might touch on technique as we seek to refine an image.  This is not a composition class, although we might consider small tweaks to an image to improve its composition. This IS a class where you’ll practice becoming quiet inside so that you can truly see what’s in front of you and discover the wealth of imagery that’s always right there if you just pay attention.

During the first (3-hour) session we’ll do a series of exercises with and without the camera to help you begin to look at the world differently. For the remaining 4 sessions we’ll review images you bring in to class in response to thematic weekly assignments.  During the final session we’ll invite friends and family to a slide show of each persons favorite images from the class.

Carla Kimball has a degree in Counseling/Psychology and a specialization in Expressive Therapy. As a long time practitioner of the contemplative arts (meditation, tai chi, yoga), a facilitator of group experience, and a photographer of ordinary things, Carla has experienced the power of photography to quiet the mind.  Two years ago she began a daily photo blog, not only as an vehicle for sharing her photographs, but also as a venue in which to practice crafting good questions and deep thought.

    Hi LIa,

I’m interested in the “How to put together a portfolio” class you have coming up. But I’d like to take the train. Can you tell me what time it will start?
The train arrives in White River at 11:05.

If you can schedule it so I can make it I will also advertise it to our Art-in-photography Meetup Group. http://www.meetup.com/Art-in-Photography/.

But either way I invite you to join the group and add your events to our calendar as notes.

    Ken

  • Hi Ken,
Unfortunately, the class is already full and there’s one person on the waiting list already. I will add
your name and let you know right away if anything changes.

I’d love to post our events on your calendar though since we have other events and classes coming up. How do I go about doing that?
    Best,
    Lia
